What in my opinion started out as a problematic and messy franchise has progressively evolved in quality with every entry, culminating in this finale which I can confidently call one of the crowning jewels of contemporary multi million dollar filmaking and a lesson for all of us on many, many things all of which I will write down in this review.
Now I will say up front that I have never even touched a book of the Hunger Games series so I cannot comment on anything regarding adaptation or the decision of splitting the last one in two. From my point of view I can say that the first part definitely justified it and with this second part I can say that three minuets into the movie I wasn't even thinking of this as a second part, I was just watching a movie that motivated the presence of almost every scene.

I cannot believe that the first movie which I really hated because of stupid world building, storytelling and tonal problems has evolved into a film this good and this breathtaking. The craft behind this picture is really palpable and passionate to the point that as I said it is a lesson. A lesson for what, you ask? A lesson for CGI correct use, a lesson for character motivation, a lesson for storytelling pace, a lesson for truly impactive and motivated action and a lesson about cinema, about justifying the money spent on this and giving back to the audience everything they wanted to experience, this is truly a film that respects its audience.
If I hadn't seen them myself I could not believe how well the actions scenes are done. Starting just from the set-pieces which are frantically breathtaking, to the camera work which is the total opposite of what the first one is. You always understand what is going on and it always pays off. Moreover the director really doesn't give you a chance to breathe once sh*t starts hitting the fan and he carries you through the whole movie with brilliant moments. Francis Lawrence lets many situations breathe, he gives a beat, he builds suspense and tension and releases them really slowly to the point where sometimes I couldn't take the rush of adrenaline anymore. This is amazing stuff, trust me.
But the brilliance doesn't end there, the characters all have fascinating archs and very good performances, Lawrence, Southerland, Moore and Hoffman definitely deserve to be mentioned above all, their commitment to this is admirable and it pays off in some performance moments of perfection. The characters also act as the foundations for what the film thematically covers, which is stunning both in the variety of it both in the way in which it covers them. Action scenes and war scenes become integrating part of these, to the same level of dialogue scenes and mold perfectly into what is at times a deeply dark look at society.
Now, lets interrupt the party for a second. The film deserves to be called out for a couple of things. Firstly, a messy starting twenty minutes which shift tone and pace a little too much. Once the film starts to get going it totally transforms in what I described above, but those first bunch of scenes was a little sloppy. Moreover, the love triangle thing is just useless and unmotivated, contrary to what the rest of the film is. Every time it is brought up (not many) my whole enthusiasm dropped.
Yet, fortunately it dropped only to be picked up again by the fantastic film we have here. No matter if you read the books or not, I would even say no matter if you've seen the other films: this is a movie which justifies to itself every scene thanks to great work by all the talented people involved.
